The movie tells the history and origin of Napoleon Bonaparte, the iconic French general during the French Revolution of 1793, and stars Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix. For those of you who are curious about the storyline, let's take a look at the synopsis below!

1. During the Revolution, a vacuum arises in the French government
The story begins during the French Revolution. In 1793, thousands of French anti-royalists gathered at the Place de la Revolution in Paris and watched Marie Antoinette (Catherine Walker) walk languidly among them.

Antoinette walked listlessly after she was sentenced to be beheaded for being a traitor to the people. Not only her, her husband Louis XVI was also sentenced to execution by the people. With both of them being beheaded during the revolution, a vacancy arose in the French government.

2. Attracted to a Widow
Meanwhile, young Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) was given the opportunity to conquer the Toulon region, which was then controlled by the British. Napoleon won a great victory in the port city and was rewarded with the title of Brigadier General.

He earned this title at a young age. Once, while attending an officer's banquet, Napoleon was attracted by the appearance of Josephine de Beauharnais (played by Vanessa Kirby). Josephine was a young widow with a beautiful face. This meeting made the relationship between the two even closer. The two decided to marry and live together in love.

3. Wife's Cheating Put Napoleon Out of Focus
However, in his life full of love, Napoleon also still harbored military ambitions and conquered several European suburbs. In the midst of his ambitions, Napoleon heard the news that Josephine was having an affair. The news emerged when Napoleon led troops in Egypt and won victory. Once the war was over, Napoleon immediately returned to investigate the news of Josephine's affair.

Family and love problems made Napoleon considered negligent in managing the military. Some members of the Central Committee believed that Napoleon was trying to defect and betray France. This rumor made Napoleon furious. In 1798, he decided to stage a coup and succeeded in ascending the throne of the First Consulate, as the supreme leader of the French government.

4. Ambition and Timetable
This obviously did not satisfy Napoleon. His ambition grew and he wanted to gain the title of emperor and rule over all of France and the conquered territories. This ambition was realized in 1804, when he was appointed Supreme Emperor of France, with Josephine as his consort. But in the process of realizing his ultimate dream, Napoleon again faced emotional problems, this time he had to face a difficult choice.

Well, in addition to Phoenix, Kirby, and Walker, the Napoleon film cast also stars Tahar Karim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, and Youssef Kerkour.
